The U.S. Department of Defense has acquired a new modular and rapidly deployable drone capability from XTEND Reality Inc., described as a “multi-dimensional drone swarm.” The system—formally called the Affordable Close Quarter Modular Effects FPV Drone Kit (ACQME-DK)—consists of small VTOL drones that can be launched from mobile or stationary “nests,” allowing forces to deploy and retrieve drones remotely rather than carrying them into operational areas.
A key feature of the system is its heavy reliance on built-in autonomy. Each drone uses AI “pilots” that enable one operator to manage multiple drones simultaneously. XTEND emphasizes that this drastically reduces the training burden, with operators able to become proficient within minutes. This operator-assisted autonomy is intended to support missions in confined, complex, or urban environments where rapid, distributed drone effects are needed.
The drones themselves are designed to be modular, supporting different payloads and mission profiles including surveillance, reconnaissance, breaching, distraction, and one-way attack roles. Communication options include both hardened radio links and fiber-optic tethering to limit exposure to jamming in contested spaces. The broader system also incorporates nests, spare components, and training modules to support sustained deployment in the field.
XTEND describes the technology as “combat-proven,” citing prior use by partner forces and iterative improvements drawn from real-world conflict zones. The acquisition reflects a broader move within U.S. defense efforts toward scalable autonomous systems that deliver mass, flexibility, and low unit cost, positioning drone swarms and distributed effects as central elements of future close-quarter and irregular-warfare operations.
